Get outside! Field day in Hillsboro will celebrate, educate about NH’s forests
Fall is the season when people from all over the world celebrate the beauty of New Hampshire’s forests. This year, there is also the opportunity to learn more about how forests are managed and some of the many ways forest products are used when the N.H. Division of Forests and Lands hosts a field day at its Caroline A. Fox Research and Demonstration Forest in Hillsborough on Sept. 21, starting at 9 a.m.
“While we’re surrounded by New Hampshire’s forestland every day, not everyone knows about the complexities of our forests and the myriad of ways they’re used,” said Inge Seaboyer, program forester at the N.H. Division of Forests and Lands. “Fox Forest Field Day is a really fun way for folks to come together and learn more about how our forests work and the work that comes from them.”
Activities and demonstrations include:
- 9–10 a.m.: Fox Program Forester Inge Seaboyer will give a tour of an active timber harvest taking place on site and explain the important role of planning for successful forest management. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
- 10–11 a.m.: Urban Forester A.J. Dupere will mill Norway spruce harvested from Fox Forest into boards using a portable sawmill
- 11 a.m.–noon: Diane DeLuca of N.H. Audubon will discuss pollinator gardens and their affect on forests and other landscapes
- 1–2 p.m.: Milling of Norway spruce harvested from Fox Forest into boards using a portable sawmill continues
Throughout the day, artist Jim Hallene of Goffstown will be demonstrating woodturning and the Baldwin Center building will be open to the public from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. for an exhibit of works by New Hampshire artists, “Art of Nature.”
There is no charge to attend Fox Forest Field Day. Events will take place rain or shine.
